Following the tragic death of three teens in the Grand Falls region in the mid 90s, the Grand Falls Suicide Prevention Committee, along with a group of school principals and health professionals, began to examine means to help youth find ways of solving their problems.  They were supported in their efforts by the Club Richelieu in Grand Falls.

In 1999, the Link Program was set up in several schools in Grand Falls.  Since then, the program has been established in grades 6 to 12 in a number of schools around the province.  Other parts of Canada are also showing an interest in the program.

Beginning in 2006, expansion to the provincial level in grades 6 to 12 was facilitated by the provincial wellness strategy of the Government of New Brunswick.  In June 2007, the Link Program was also identified as an action in the Department of Education's plan When kids come first.

The Link Program received the Provincial Prize of Excellence in Suicide Prevention on two occasions.  In September 2006, it was awarded to the Madawaska Link Program Committee for the highest growth, and in October  2002, the Grand Falls Link Program Committee received the prize for its suicide prevention efforts.
